Yusef Salaam, one of five men who was convicted—and later exonerated—of raping and assaulting a woman in Central Park in 1989 after falsely confessing, won the race to represent Democrats in Harlem on the New York City Council on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.

Salaam beat two political veterans—New York Assembly members Inez Dickens and Al Taylor—in the primary race, which was his first attempt at running for public office; the incumbent council member dropped out of the race in May but was still on the ballot.
On Wednesday, the New York Times reported Salaam had almost 64% of the vote—well ahead of Dickens’ 36% after the first round of ranked-choice voting.
Though this race was for the Democratic primary, it’s not expected that Salaam will face a serious challenger, if any, in November’s council general election.
When he declared victory Tuesday night, Salaam said in his speech his campaign was “about those who have been counted out … those who have been forgotten” and the “Harlem community who has been pushed into the margins of life and made to believe that they were supposed to be there,” CNN reported.

“This is a victory for justice, dignity and decency for the Harlem community we love,” Salaam said in a statement to the New York Times. “It’s a victory in support of not turning our backs on those in need, for saying we are our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers and for saying the only way for all of us to thrive is to believe in the promise we all have.”

As a member of the Central Park Five, Salaam was arrested when he was 15 with four other Black and Latino men on rape and assault charges of a woman jogging in Central Park; they were later pressured by police into giving false confessions. The five men served between five and 12 years in prison before DNA evidence and a confession linked a different person to the case. New York City paid the men a total of $41 million after their convictions were overturned in 2002. After he was exonerated, Salaam moved to Georgia to become an activist and an author before returning to New York City in December to launch his City Council campaign.
